Research Farm Technician

Position Overview

Location: Butler, MO

Choice Genetics USA is looking for qualified individuals to work at their Genetic Nucleus Research farm.  Qualified individuals will be responsible for animal husbandry and production in their designated areas within the production facility.  Employees will get involved with the accurate collection of data during the different production phases and work flows, and follow standard operating procedures during each process.

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Ensuring animal well-being through general animal husbandry practices, including availability of feed, water, and proper environmental conditions.
  • Administering treatment and vaccinations as required.
  • Perform accurate data collection using provided hardware and software.
  • Following designated biosecurity protocols.
  • Uphold Choice Genetics USA quality care and production standards.

Requirement:

High School Diploma required.  Ag-related background or post-secondary education preferred.

Individual must be motivated and able to follow directions and complete tasks effectively, be organized, and take initiative.  They must be dependable.  Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to climb or step over gates 36 inches in height.  Pushing, pulling, bending and kneeling, as well as regular walking and standing are a requirement for this position.
This position requires the employee to work closely with supervisors and production staff, therefore the applicant must have the ability to think proactively, work in a team environment, be flexible within the team and have the desire to learn.  Direct contact with animals will occur, so good herdsmanship and bio-security practices must be understood and practiced at all times.

R&D Technician

Position Overview

Location: Butler, MO

To assist the Farm Supervisor and Department Leads in accomplishing the daily, weekly, and monthly goals set by R&D staff by providing support, encouragement, and training. Ensure accurate and timely data collection in areas where Choice Genetics Data Collection software is in use. Be an advocate for Choice Genetics, policies, and procedures.

Major Areas of Responsibility

1.     Monitor pen configurations as pigs are moved into the nursery.

2.     Monitor pen configurations as pigs are moved into the finisher.

3.     Ensure the Offtest Schedule is being followed for animals being CTscanned.

4.     Manage PPT barn feed systems and operations.

5.     Organize and manage tissue sample collection for DT testing.

6.     Assist in assuring selected boars and gilts are of proper composition before delivery, and assist in that delivery.

7.     Provide any other expertise or duties that will help the company achieve its objectives.

Requirements:

High School Diploma required.  Ag-related background or post-secondary education preferred.

Finishing/Nursery Lead

Major Purpose:

Location: Butler, MO

To lead the Finishing/Nursery Team in accomplishing the daily, weekly, and monthly goals set by both production and R&D staff by providing support, encouragement, and training.  Ensure accurate and timely data collection in the finishing/nursery area.  Be an advocate for Choice Genetics, policies, and procedures.

Detailed Descriptions:

  1. Ensure basic survival needs of the pig are met. Ensure proper levels of food and water are delivered, as well as proper environment for the pig is met.  Ensure daily observations are properly recorded on door sheets.
  2. Ensure vaccination and treatment protocols are being followed.
  3. Ensure proper pen configurations of pigs are placed in nursery each week.
  4. Ensure proper pen configurations of pigs are placed in finishing each week.
  5. Ensure pigs are being put ontest each week.
  6. Ensure pigs are sent to PPT barn each week.
  7. Ensure pigs are weighed at 120-day interval weight each week.
    1. Ensure that all boars are receiving their first immune-castration injection at this time.
  8. Ensure selected boars are pulled from their finishing pens and moved to the boar holding area immediately after selection results are available. Report new locations.
  9. Ensure selected gilts are pulled from their finishing pens and moved to the GDU immediately after selection results are available. Report new locations.
  10. Ensure daily heat checking and HNS events are recorded in the early GDU.
  11. Ensure non-select boars are immuno-castrated immediately after selection results are available. Boars must be recorded as immune-castrated and tracked.
  12. Ensure weaned pigs sold from nursery are properly entered into the computer as being sold.
  13. Ensure timely and humane pig euthanasia is provided when necessary.
  14. Ensure necessary maintenance is carried out in a timely fashion.
  15. To assist with loading/unloading of customer sales and market animals within your department, and other departments when called upon.
  16. Ensure cleaning and disinfection protocols are met throughout the finishing facility.
  17. Ensure you are actively participating in all aforementioned activities.
  18. Provide any other expertise or duties that will help the company achieve its objectives.

Farrowing Herdsman

Major Purpose:

Location: Butler, MO

To play a critical role within the Farrowing Team to accomplish the daily, weekly, and monthly goals set by both production and R&D staff.  Provide necessary survival needs and care to the animals residing in the farrowing department. Provide accurate and timely data collection in the farrowing area.  Be an advocate for Choice Genetics, our policies, and procedures.

Detailed Descriptions:

  1. Provide basic survival needs for the pigs.
    1. Deliver lactation feed, check water, and provide creep feed where necessary.
      1. Ensure feeders are clear from non-fresh feed.
    2. Provide the proper environment for the sows and the piglets.
    3. Ensure daily observations are properly recorded on door sheets.
  2. Provide vaccination at the proper vaccination intervals.
  3. Provide treatment to pigs when necessary and record.
  4. Maintain animal flow.
    1. Sows are moved into and out of farrowing on specified schedules.
    2. Nurse the proper numbers of pigs per crate.
    3. Wean sows and piglets according to specified schedule.
  5. Provide early piglet care.
  6. Daily processing of piglets according to current protocols, providing accurate data collection.
  7. Provide timely and humane pig euthanasia when necessary.
  8. Scrape behind sows pre farrow and up to day 7 post farrow.
  9. To assist with loading/unloading of customer sales and market animals within your department, and other departments when called upon.
  10. Ensure necessary maintenance is carried out in a timely fashion.
  11. Provide necessary cleaning and disinfection throughout the farrowing facility. Clean hallways, alleys, and crates are expected.
  12. Provide any other expertise or duties that will help the company achieve its objectives.

Requirement:

High School Diploma required.  Ag-related background or post-secondary education preferred.

CT Assistant

Major Purpose:

Location: Butler, MO

To assist the CT Technician in accomplishing the daily scanning process.  Assist the Finishing Lead with their duties when CT scanning duties have been completed.  Be an advocate for Choice Genetics, policies, and procedures.

Detailed Descriptions:

  1. Follow the Offtest Schedule for animals being CTscanned. Ensure pigs are off feed for 24 hours prior to scanning.  Complete the scanning of boars early in the week, followed by gilts later in the week.
  2. Assist with prepping animals for anesthesia and transport of animals to and from the CT machine.
  3. To assist with loading/unloading of customer sales and market animals within your department, and other departments when called upon.
  4. Assist the Finishing Lead with their duties when CT scanning duties have been completed.
  5. Provide any other expertise or duties that will help the company achieve its objectives.

Requirement:
